There is currently a facebook debate going on because of the NBA finals. I live in Texas, so of course, everyone, fans and bandwagoners alike, are adorned in all Mavs t-shirts and hats. But, the heightened love for “our” team has brought to light the Heat fans sprinkled among all the Mav “die-hards.” So, is it okay to love a team that isn’t from your state?
Yes. It is perfectly okay. I have a problem with people that think they have to like the Cowboys, Rangers, Mavs and Stars just because we live here. That’s almost worse than people liking out of state teams for the fun of it. So many “fans” just claim to be because they’re from Texas, but they couldn’t tell you anything about the team at all. Yet, I know a lot of Heat fans that actually liked the team during the season, especially with key players like LeBron James and Dwayne Wade, they’re bound to attract fans from all around the states. I’m not saying all these Heat fans are actual Heat fans, I know for a fact some of them are doing it to piss people off, but some actually care more for their team than the people who are complaining about them being Heat fans.
And this goes for all sports. I find this extremely relevant because the Twins just got done with their series against the Rangers. I love the Rangers, they are my second favorite team and I did grow up liking them simply because they are from Texas, but when I got older, I was able to make my own decision, which led me to the Twins. I don’t know everything about the Twins, but I know a lot more than people give me credit for. Friday, when the Twins got murdered by the Rangers, my phone was blowing up with texts about the score, yet I can guarantee you half those people don’t even follow baseball.
A girl commented during this debate saying, “But why would you have pride in a state you don’t live in?” I hate Texas, I hate most things about it. Thing is, I’ve lived here since I was a little kid, and I didn’t have much say. Sure, now that we’re college aged and we can go out of state, most of us are in college and in-state tuition just seems much more appealing. I’m not saying we shouldn’t have pride, it’s just not mandatory, especially since we didn’t necessarily decide to live here. What am I supposed to do, move to Minnesota because I’m a Twins fan? No.
And that’s almost like saying people who don’t live in Texas can’t like Texas teams. Maybe that’s why Rhode Island doesn’t have any teams, because then they’d have like, no fans at all. It’s annoying. It’s like saying, we can’t have a real opinion because we’re from Texas so our minds are made up once we cross the border. I think liking an unexpected team shows you actually follow the sport because you can decide on your own who it is you want to root for, not your address. And I’m not saying, you have to like an out of state team to prove that you’re an actual fan. It is possible to just so happen to like your home team.
To say that liking another team is wrong because they’re not in your time zone is ignorant. And on that note, I will forever be a Twins fan, regardless my area code. (:
I’ve fought with my bestfriend cuz she wants me to go hangout with her.
I can’t. The Twins game is on.
I can watch the Twins games this series. Thank you for playing the Rangers.
The bad thing is I don’t know whether to be happy or pissed about Hamilton’s homerun.
